Humans of Thorps, Week 3: Jamie!

This post is part of a series called Humans of Thorps, where we’ll be sharing cuts & color, style inspiration, product guides, and random fun tidbits from one stylist per week. Posts will go up on our Instagram and Facebook all week, then be collected on our website along with an interview. We hope you enjoy getting to know the Thorps team!

Our featured stylist for July 28th — August 2nd was the bubbly, hilarious Jamie.

Jamie has been cutting hair for nine years and has been at THORPS since spring 2010. She loves long, big, curly, feminine styles and warm, sun-kissed colors. Around the shop she’s best known for her love of the curling iron, Beyoncé, and her two adorable kiddos (not necessarily in that order!)

When it comes to long locks, Jamie’s policy is the bigger, the better. These may be editorial looks, but they sure do make you want to invest in a good round brush and can of hairspray!

photo 5

In your shower…under your pillows…between the car seats…in every purse…raise your hand if you feel Jamie on this one!

photo 2

And that’s why you should always book your appointments at regular intervals!

photo 2 (1)

Nine-year-old Jamie slept in braids to get this crimped look. Those poofy bangs though…how she achieved those is a stylist’s secret!

photo 3

Here’s another throwback of Jamie with an ombré before ombrés were cool. She achieved this look with the ever-tempting, always-disastrous Sun-In. Sunkissed locks are hard to DIY–may we suggest you book with Jamie instead?

90s and 00s comedies are in constant rotation in Jamie's Netflix queue. Which of these is your favorite?

Teenage Jamie used to document her box dye adventures with before & after pictures. She was missing the after picture, so we improvised. Think her transformation was a success?

THORPS: What’s the worst hairstyle you’ve ever had?
Jamie:
Looking back some of my hairstyles were pretty awful, but at the time I loved them all! I always was pretty bossy with what I wanted and wasn’t afraid to tell my stylist.
A couple that made me cry was when I colored my own hair before prom to look like a “carmely Jennifer Anniston” but it turned into a brassy copper penny color at the roots with gothic black ends–not the prom look I was going for!  And then when I was pregnant with Maddie, I did NOT follow my own advice (which is don’t do anything drastic to your hair with raging hormones!) and I cut my bangs…myself…too short. I was pregnant and puffy and crying because my bangs made my face look fat. Don’t think that was the problem! ;)

THORPS: Who’s your dream celebrity client?
Jamie:
Kate Hudson, because she’s such a girly beach babe, or Drew Barrymore because she switches her hair up a lot but always keeps it warm, pretty and feminine.

THORPS: What’s one hairstyle you’ve always wanted to try but probably never will?
Jamie:
Pixie! For sure! I am such a long hair girl at heart that it probably will never happen, but I would love to try it for a day…just a day.

THORPS: What styling tools should everyone own?
Jamie:
Curling iron! A blow dryer is a given, but everyone needs a curling iron too. Even if you have great natural texture everyone can benefit by touching up the curls that won’t behave, making wavy hair even beachier, or using it to relax too tight of curls. No one has that perfectly un-done, “I just woke up like this with my natural, messy texture.” They all have product, a little blow dry at the roots and a few wraps around the curling iron to make it look “natural.”

THORPS: What’s the funniest thing Maddie [her daughter, age 3] has said lately?
Jamie:
Probably that her snot tastes like mushrooms–and that’s why she eats it! She has an answer for everything and opinions for days–so. much. personality! But I love it :)

Humans of Thorps, Week 2: Claire!

Our featured stylist for July 21st — July 26th was our resident rocker Claire.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

Claire came to Thorps in August 2011, right after graduating from cosmetology school. She’s six feet of pure hilarity, and a skilled barber to boot. She’s inspired by everything from comic book characters to 1970s punk rockers.

Jake was a first-time Thorps client. Look at that sharp part–and that smile! We’re sure he’ll become one of Claire’s regulars in no time.

Fringed & lovely with the perfect touch of messy–for longer styles, Claire loves Davines Sea Salt Spray.

There’s a big difference between a mullet and a shag–because shags are effortlessly cool and instantly evoke a rocker vibe. Claire styles her own ‘do with Davines Curl Building Serum and Alder Hair Powder.

Midway through the week, Claire switched up her blue locks for this dreamy dark green! Would you dare go verde?

photo (1)

Her hair may be green now, but she’s going through a musical blue period. Some of Claire’s favorite albums: 1) Thin Lizzy – Black Rose: A Rock Legend 2) Protex – Strange Obsessions 3) Weezer – The Blue Album 4) The Go-Go’s – Beauty & The Beat

A tight fade will never go out of style. Claire loves the precision involved in barber’s cuts.

Super short, super messy, or super classic: Claire cuts ‘em all.

Some of Claire’s favorite products: 1) Davines Vegetarian Miracle Conditioner breathes life into dry & damaged hair and doubles as a cream cleanser. 2) Davines Oi Oil smoothes and adds shine, making styling a breeze. 3) Brooklyn Grooming Fort Greene Classic Beard Oil smells like lavender and revives even the most neglected of beards. 4) Uppercut Deluxe Pomade provides high-shine and a gravity-defying hold.

Some of Claire’s favorite movies–add these to your Netflix queue for a healthy dose of absurdity.

THORPS: What’s the worst haircut you’ve ever had?
Claire: I unfortunately did a lot of terrible things to my own hair in my youth, including shaved head, all sorts of Mohawks, DIY basement perm, and every kind of box dye imaginable. The worst color was probably after I had my hair bleached professionally, and I had used a box dye to get it back to brown. I went to Alabama on spring break and used Sun-In, which was all sorts of horrible.

THORPS: What drew you to barbering?
Claire: I have always been drawn to the attention to detail required with shorter haircuts. I am constantly more impressed with a nice barbers cut than any color or longer hairstyle.

THORPS: What’s your dream musical supergroup?
Claire: Most of the bands and groups that I love are comprised of talented musicians that I adore and respect, which makes it very difficult for me to pick a “dream supergroup.” I would have to say that I would like to see Ozzy Osbourne front the Who, because Roger Daltrey is a walking, fringe-covered turd. John Entwistle and Keith Moon rank very high on my respective lists of favorite bassists and drummers, and Pete Townshend had some very nice jumpsuits back in the day. I always felt that the Who was more of a power trio than a four piece. Maybe I am not giving Roger enough credit? I might come up with thirteen other combinations after I am able to marinate on this question a little longer, but it will save those for another day.

And a bonus: Claire’s cat, Samuel L. Jackson. Yes, he really once slept like that.

Thanks for following along this week with Claire! If you’d like to book with Claire, you can call the shop at 608/467.2222 or book online.

SURPRISE SALE

Humans of Thorps, Week 1: Tara!

Our featured stylist for July 14th — July 20th  was the lovely Tara.

photo 3

Tara has been cutting hair professionally since 2009 and joined the Thorps team in 2010, where she’s brought an easygoing vibe and tons of skill in giving perfectly subtle highlights and low-maintenance cuts.

Here are some styles Tara created in the shop last week:

Looking for an easy-to-style cut? Tara suggests you try out a bob–a stacked bob (like on Mary, right) is especially simple. Tara also did Mary’s beautiful blonde color.

photo 1

These soft blonde highlights add a sunny vibe and dimension to dark hair while still looking natural. Subtle or grown-out highlights are some of Tara’s favorites.

Tara found herself with a little extra time on her hands one afternoon and practiced her braiding skills on our receptionist. Cornrows may not be your cup of tea, but adding a few sweet braids to a summer wedding updo gives a romantic, boho look.

Beachy waves, chunky bobs, and golden blonde highlights are some of Tara’s favorite looks.

For chill locks, Tara recommends the following Davines products, all available in our shop: 1) Oi All-in-One Milk 2) Sea Salt Spray 3) Strong Hold Hairspray 4) Hair Refresher dry shampoo to keep your style going strong into day 2!

THORPS: What’s the worst haircut you’ve ever had?
Tara:
When I was 8 my mom took me to a barber on the Navy base where we lived. He gave me bowl cut that was so bad it’s hard for me to even call it a bowl cut. I didn’t shed too many tears though ’cause I was a bit of a tomboy and always outside.

THORPS: Who are your style icons?
Tara:
Generally my taste in style stays pretty consistent. I don’t really look up to anyone in particular. However, there is a group of people that I’ll give a nod to, the women of Madison that seem to somehow pull together this awesome sort of “sporty-bohemian” look on a St. Vinny’s budget…definitely impressive.

THORPS: Describe your perfect summer day.
Tara:
Early to midday river paddle with a picnic on a sandbar, then a short bike ride to the Union for a beer or two.

THORPS: What’s the one hair tip you tell every client?
Tara:
Less shampoo more conditioner, and having good quality products to start with makes a world of difference!
